Borlase BeginnersBattle Hard at Olympic Lake 10/12/11
On a very chilly December morning, the year 9 boys had theirfirst experience of competitive racing. Twenty-one committed year nines arrivedat Dorney Lake at 7.30am, in order to rig the boats in time for the 9 o’clockstart. Once the boats were rigged and the warm up was complete, Borlase wereready to go!
The first group of races were 1K time trials in a range of Octs and Quads. Despite a valiant effortby the Borlase A Oct, a more experienced Claires Court A snatched the win by 6seconds. The Borlase B Oct dominated Windsor Boys; beating them by over 10seconds. Lastly, due to uneven numbers a composite quad was made up of threeBorlasians and one Claires Court boy. This ‘modified quad’ rowed maturely downthe lake and beat all the other quads competing in the head!
The next group of races were not time trials; instead theywere ‘head to head’ 1k sprints. First, four strong rowers from the Borlase A’s,switched to a quad and demolished its opponents from Windsor Boys and ClairesCourt. After that, a changed Borlase A boat showed great determination in theirrace against Claires Court and only finished a few lengths behind. Finally, thelast race of the day included the Borlase B Oct. As well as beating itscompetitor, this Oct powered past other boats that had begun before them!
Overall, the boys gained great experience from the event(how to rig the boats, how to line up at the start and most importantly how tokeep warm!) not forgetting that they had an enjoyable time!
A big thank you goesto our coaches Johnny and Harry for managing the boys throughout the day and toMr Bolier for helping greatly with the de-rigging. Lastly, thanks to any parents for braving the freezing temperatures to support the boys.
