This year Borlase Rowing travelled to Amsterdam to compete at the Heineken Roeivierkamp. Crews from all over the world travel to compete at this event and the city becomes alive with rowers for the weekend. The race is hosted by Nereus, the most successful boat club in Holland and all of the four races finish directly outside their boat house in the city centre with thousands of supporters cheering and taking advantage of the sponsors discounted refreshments.
Our crews travelled out on Thursday afternoon after lessons and arrived late in the evening. We trained on the river on Friday to familiarise ourselves with the very twisty river Amstel and figure out the fastest racing line. Nereus hosted all the squads who were racing for dinner on Friday night and gave us a chance to look around their historic boat club and mingle with some of the senior international rowers who were competing. We returned to our 130 year old Dutch sailing barge on the canal where we were slowly rocked to sleep and ready for racing in the morning.
The format of racing was different to anywhere we have competed before. The race was split in to 4 events, a 5k and 2k head race and a 750 and 250 side by side race. Medals were given out for each event winner and an overall trophy was given to the crew who gained the most points from the four races.
Borlase had 5 crews racing.

The weekend was a fantastic experience for all of the crews. It really brought the whole squad together. We often have to train separately when at home because of lack of space/equipment and rarely get to go away as a whole squad. This trip really brought everyone together and we are all excited to return again soon!
