On Saturday 5th of May Borlase Rowing competed in the Junior Sculling Regatta at Dorney Lake. The event saw hundreds of schools from all over the country compete on the 2000m Olympic Rowing Course. Borlase Rowing had crews competing in 16 different events.
Year 9 Boys 8x+
Elliot Kent, John Kennedy, Lucas Roberts, Max Byng-Maddick, Toby Tremmeling, Keanu Temtkin, Charles Betz, Dom Young and cox Jackson Hatfield were looking to improve on their 6th place finish at the Junior Sculling Head in the winter. They rowed a very controlled time trial finishing in 5th place putting them in to the A final with Windsor Boys, Hampton, Latymer, Kings College and Team Keane. They stepped on in the final finishing in 4th place, just 3 seconds off Windsor Boys School who took the Bronze medal. Hampton School took the win in this event. This was the first side by side regatta for our year 9 rowers.
Year 9 Girls 8x+
Elizabeth Rietdyk, Yasmin Aspinall, Poppy M-I, Emily Stephens, Eilidh Duncan, Charlotte Dudley, Katherine Sayers, Ana Graham and cox Tia Panell Were also racing in their first ever side by side regatta. The girls raced well in their time trial putting them in the B final, an improvement on their performance at the Junior Sculling Head. They raced their final later in the day looking to overhaul our local rivals Marlow Rowing Club, unfortunately they finished just the wrong side of them and held their 12th place. Surbiton were the Gold Medal winners in this event.
Year 9 Boys 4x+
Our boys year 9 quad consisted of Olly Cox, James Irons, Mani Ipchi, Max Rhamain and cox Adam Ulhaq. Unfortunately this boat missed out on the B final by just 4 seconds. They put on a strong display in their earlier rounds of the regatta beating our local rivals RGS High Wycombe A and B boats.
Year 10 Boys 4x+A
Our Year 10 boys quad were looking to improve on their 4th place finish in the Junior Sculling Head during the winter. Ben Furley, Ben Jackson, Olly Gale, Joe Haslehurst and cox Olly Sage dead heated with favorites Tideway Scullers in the time trial, both crews recording 6:19.0. The final looked like it was going to be an absolute humdinger with Windsor Boys, and Walton also very close in the time trial. In the final Borlase shot off the start and took an early lead, which they held until 400 meters to go where Tideway Scullers crept through and took the gold medal just 1.4 seconds in front of Borlase. Windsor Boys took Bronze.
Year 10 Boys 4x+B
Ethan Lennard, Joel Scurlock, Gabe Dorosh, Deen Khawar and cox Olly Visintin were racing in the second quad event. They raced well in the time trial, sneaking in to the B final by 0.1 seconds, just in front in front of American School London. This guaranteed them the bronze medal as only 2 other B boats had made the A/B finals. They were keen to take the silver or Gold from Tideway Sculler B or RGS High Wycombe in their final. Unfortunately both these crews proved too strong for them and they took the Bronze finishing 12th overall.
Year 10 Girls 4x+
The Year 10s had two quads racing. Sasha Radford, Aimee Markwell, Simrit Dhariwal and late substitute Rhaya Dharwar with cox Bridget Smith, made up one boat. Olivia Winter, Mel Stewart, Taran Sandhar, Rebecca Lamping and cox Jackson Hatfield made up the other. Both crews raced hard through the time trial but were disappointed to not progress through to the finals, finishing in 27th and 29th respectively.
Year 10 Boys 2x
Our year 10 boys double consisted of Ed Norris and Billy Macleod. Having spent the last few weeks coxing, Ed Norris was keen to turn his attention to rowing in preparation for National Schools. They raced well but were overpowered by many of the crews, they finished in 18th position with Hinksey Sculling School taking the Gold.
Year 10 Girls 2x
Dani Taverner and Ellie Harkin took on the doubles event and after a fast first 500m in the time trial secured a place in the C final for the afternoon. In the final they started well but at 100m in the sheer power produced by the girls resulted in a blade breaking and they had to paddle the rest of the way. The year 10s now look ahead to racing the 8+ at Nat Schools.
Year 11 Boys 4x
The quad of Sam Nicklin, Oliver Lane, Ed O'Neill and Max Clark finished 4th at the Junior Sculling Head, just 1 second off the silver medalists Walton. They rowed a controlled time trial placing them in the A final alongside Walton, Windsor Boys, Leander, Henley and Bryanston School. Borlase took an early lead and held a lead of a length through the 1000m and 1500m mark. Walton stepped up the pace in the last 200 of the race and snuck their bows in front on the last stroke. Borlase finished in the silver medal position, just 0.3 seconds behind Walton.
Year 12 Boys 2x
Our year 12 double of Matt Covus and new Borlase rower Louis O'Connell were up against a tough field and did not manage to progress through the time trial. Tideway Scullers, Windsor Boys and Peterborough took the top 3 medals in this event.
Year 13 Boys 1x
Evan Fisher and Matt Jones were our representatives in this event. Matt Jones was looking to break his habit of falling in at big national regattas, he did this but unfortunately just missed out on the final. Evan qualified for the A final and was looking to step up from his great performance at GB trials last month. He took the race on in the first 500m, leading the Fawley Challenge cup winner from Windsor Boys through the first 2 markers. The scullers changed positions through the last 1000m and Evan finished 4th, just 2 seconds off the bronze medal. Maidenhead took gold with Windsor Boys and Henley taking silver and Bronze.
